Woodborough is a parish and large straggling village, 8 miles north-north-east from Nottingham, 3 miles north-west from Lowdham station, and 141 from London, in the Hundred of Thurgarton, Basford Union, South Notts, diocese of Lincoln. The living is a perpetual curacy, value £98, with 55 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the chapter of Southwell; Rev’d Samuel Lealand Oldacres is the incumbent. The church of St Swithin is a stone building, with a tower and 4 bells, and was partly repaired a short time since; it has some stained glass. The Baptists, Primitive Methodists and Wesleyans, have each a chapel. The Free school has an income of £95 yearly; the poor have £3 10s yearly. The population, in 1851, was 852; the acreage 1940. The people are employed in framework knitting. This was a Roman settlement. Bricks are made here.
